About the Book
Henri Bendel, the store, was a trend-setting New York retail emporium for an extraordinary 123 years, but remarkably little is known about Bendel the man— a once-celebrated merchant prince.
In a book Town and Country calls a “must read,” Tim Allis traces Bendel’s life from his upbringing in a large, tight-knit Jewish family to his early dry goods business, the romance that led him to New York, and his ascent in the rarified world of high fashion. Allis recounts the history of his celebrated store — from the days of bustles, corsets, furs and flappers, to the tailored chic of the 1930s and ’40s, on through its vibrant era as the chicest shop in the country in the 1960s and ’70s, all the way to its glitzy Gossip Girl years before closing in 2019.

About the Speakers
As Henri Bendel did, author Tim Allis calls both Lafayette, Louisiana and New York City home. He was a senior editor at In Style for 12 years following his time with D magazine (Dallas) and People. He has contributed articles to Out, Men’s Health, Time Out New York, Saveur, CNN.com, and Playbill.com, among others.
Bancroft Prize winner Andy Horowitz serves as both Connecticut State Historian and Associate Professor of History at UCONN.
