SUMMARY:In the Mood for Love at Cinestudio
DESCRIPTION:Hill-Stead Museum is pleased to partner with Cinestudio to screen a selection of films inspired by our latest exhibition The Great Wave: Japonisme at Hill-Stead. Ticketing will be available through Cinestudio. Stay tuned for more details and ticketing!\nThursday\, April 16 at 7:00pm\nIn the Mood for Love (2000)\, Wong Kar-wai\nHong Kong\, 1962: Chow Mo-Wan (Tony Leung Chiu Wai) and Su Li-Zhen (Maggie Cheung Man Yuk) move into neighboring apartments on the same day. Their encounters are formal and polite—until a discovery about their spouses creates an intimate bond between them. At once delicately mannered and visually extravagant\, Wong Kar Wai’s In the Mood for Love is a masterful evocation of romantic longing and fleeting moments. With its aching soundtrack and exquisitely abstract cinematography by Christopher Doyle and Mark Lee Ping Bing\, this film has been a major stylistic influence on the past two decades of cinema\, and is a milestone in Wong’s redoubtable career.\n

SUMMARY:Hill-Stead Short Course: Possibilities of Portraiture
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE\nApril 30\, 2026 – Ancient Art and the Origins of Western Portraiture\nOften created at the cutting edge of artistic practice\, portraits dramatize the identities of sitters and artists in complex and paradoxical ways. A portrait\, moreover\, can easily become a tool for a wider message that transcends the individual it represents. Taking a transhistorical approach to the portrait—and dealing with artworks in a variety of media from the ancient world to the present day—this short course of lectures looks at different ways in which portraiture has been used for purposes that range from memorializing the individual to conveying abstract ideas to enforcing the will of the state.\nNo previous course work in art history is required and no background reading is assigned. Artworks from the collection of Hill-Stead will be emphasized. Each lecture will run about 45 minutes. The sessions will be followed by a Q&A.\nTickets\nSingle Lecture: $30 members; $35 non-members\nFull Course: $180 members; $210 non-members \nREGISTER HERE\nSchedule (Spring 2026):\n(Every other Thursday at 6PM at Hill-Stead)\nApril 30\, 2026 – Ancient Art and the Origins of Western Portraiture\nMay 14\, 2026 – Varieties of Renaissance Portraiture\nMay 28\, 2026 – Caricature as Portraiture\nJune 11\, 2026 – Photography and Portraiture\nJune 25\, 2026 – Modern Art and Symbolic Portraiture\nJuly 9\, 2026 – Self-Portraiture
