Hill-Stead Museum invites you to a special evening on Thursday, January 29 at 5:30PM  to view our current exhibition, The Great Wave: Japonisme at Hill-Stead, with a panel discussion and audience Q&A led by members of our Curatorial Team: Melanie Bourbeau, Senior Curator; Elena Hall, Development & Curatorial Manager; and Ana Alvarez, Economic & Curatorial Manager. Hill-Stead Board member George Trumbull IV, Ph.D, will lead us in a dynamic discussion exploring the discoveries made while researching for the exhibition, the incredible connections made with institutions and art historians further afield, and offer a behind-the-scenes glimpse at how the museum moves from idea, to research, to opening night of an exhibit.
We hope you can join us as we spend an evening reflecting on the incredible journeys of Alfred Atmore Pope, the collector behind out woodblock print collection; his daughter, Theodate Pope Riddle, who travelled to Japan in 1919 and brought back such spectacular masterpieces as the two Medieval Buddhist handscrolls on display; and of our own staff as they discovered new details about the fascinating development of the Pope Family’s collection and experience of Japonisme.
Cocktail reception to follow. Doors open at 5:30PM, conversation starts at 6PM.
