Exotic Brews and Splendid Silver – A Decorative Arts Study Group (DASG) Event

Learn about silver and the history of tea and coffee cultureWhen tea, coffee and chocolate were introduced to the West in the 17th century, they revolutionized drinking habits. The high cost of these exotic beverages and their popularity in Europe’s royal courts necessitated that the vessels for these exclusive drinks should be equally rare – and thus they became the domain of the silversmith.

  • This lecture by Jennifer Pitman, from RAGO, a leading auction house based in New Jersey, traces the history of silver tea and coffee wares from their introduction through the 20th century and highlights the works of the most preeminent English and American silversmiths. Also included is an introduction to understanding silver hallmarks.
  • Ms. Pitman will also conduct appraisals on site for up to two items per attendee.
  • Enjoy tea service by Culteavo.

Free to members of the Decorative Arts Study Group; $10 for Museum members; $15 for non-members.

Jennifer Pitman is a 20-year auction professional and previous Head of Christie’s Silver Department who serves as in-person liaison to RAGO’s team of seasoned experts.
