The Culture of Wild Food
with Prof. Rachel Black, Associate Professor and Chair of the Anthropology Department, Connecticut College
Is there such a thing as wild food? Building on the central theme of Dana Sherwood: Animal Appetites and Other Encounters in Wildness, this talk will examine cultural notions of wilderness through food and look at the ways in which Sherwood blurs the lines between the human and animal worlds.
From hunting and gathering to foraging and creating elaborate pièce montée, Black will examine food as a cultural object that can bring us closer to the environment or attempt to distance us from what we think of as the natural world.
