Virtual Lecture #1: An Introduction to Currier & Ives

with Bryan LeBeau, Professor, Georgetown University and the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and Author

Currier & Ives has been referred to as The Grand Central Depot for Cheap and Popular Prints. In the course of some seven decades of the 19th century, Currier & Ives created a legacy of more than 7,000 prints, that sold in the uncounted millions – at one point accounting for 95% of all lithographs in circulation in the United States. LeBeau discusses the origins and evolution of one of the most successful producers of popular art in American history, how it was the product of its time and place, and how this “art in the parlor” –- greeted both as the democratization and debasement of fine art –- attracted such a following.
