Join us for a screening of “Mary Cassatt: Painting the Modern Woman.” This new documentary released in 2023 presents an interesting and moving overview of the life of Impressionist painter, Mary Cassatt (1844 – 1926). The film shows Cassatt as an independent woman who pursued her own artistic path, within the Impressionist group. It also grants her the admiration and the respect she has been largely denied throughout the history of art.
At Hill-Stead we want to pay homage to Cassatt’s life, not only because our collection includes her work, but also because she had strong ties to the Pope family. Cassatt traveled to Hill-Stead to spend time with Theodate and her father Alfred. We believe she even advised Alfred on some artwork acquisitions, and persuaded him to purchase some of the pieces that are now in Hill-Stead’s collection. Theodate also traveled to Paris and spent time in Cassatt’s apartment and studio in the French city. Cassatt’s friendship with Theodate went beyond the artistic realm, as they both supported the suffragist movement and had an interest in spiritualism.
The screening will take place outside on the West Lawn. Bring a blanket, chairs, and a picnic to enjoy this eye-opening documentary.

Isamu Noguchi: Metal the Mirror

“Here is where finally opposites come together, I see a surprising purity. Stone is the depth, metal the mirror. They do not conflict…” —Isamu Noguchi While the renowned sculptor Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988) is best known for his work in stone, he consistently explored new materials and methods during his wide-ranging career. He first experimented with aluminum in the 1950s and later with galvanized steel, creating a series of twenty-six sculptures in collaboration with Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles in 1982–83.…
