Teen Studio: Mixed Media Painting at NBMAA

In this 3-day workshop, students will work with artist and educator Lara Del Piano to look closely at the works of Cool School artists featured in the exhibition California Dreaming: Ed Moses, Billy Al Bengston & Ed Ruscha and learn to construct abstract canvases. Color, pattern, texture, and design are equally as important in abstract painting as in landscape or figurative painting. Drawing on Ed Moses’s association with textiles, students will use mixed media to paint over fabrics in order to explore creating textures and patterns. To finish their pieces, students will have the option to include a figurative or typographic feature over their abstract field, borrowing from design elements in the work of Ed Ruscha and Billy Al Bengston and executed by prominent contemporary artists such as Kehinde Wiley.
