about

Join MMoA Executive Director and Chief Curator Susan Fisher for “Looking at Art”—part gallery talk, part discussion, of one work of art, for one hour, once a month.

Lars Thorsen (1876-1952), Chesebros Wharf, Noank, before 1930. Oil on canvas. MMoA permanent collection. Donated by the Estate of Rowena M. Owens.

On May 13 we will discuss the art and life of Norwegian-born artist Lars Thorsen (1876-1952), featured in Lars Thorsen: From Norway to Noank. Thorsen worked as a mess-boy, sailmaker, rigger, rounded Cape Horn five times by the age of 20, and raced in the America’s Cup before settling with his family in Noank and becoming a member of the Mystic Art Association. Self-taught, his artwork tells the story of an identity forged in motion.

Admission to Looking at Art is free to MMoA members, $10 to nonmembers. Free parking with admission. Attendance is limited to foster discussion, so reserve your seat ahead of time: register online before 4pm on April 8 or call 860.536.7601 x 0.
